Why I’m Not Watching the Super Bowl (and why you shouldn’t either)

AI Summary

This provocative article is a personal manifesto against the modern spectacle of the Super Bowl, arguing that it represents a dangerous diversion from what truly matters. The author, drawing from a study of media and history, frames the event as a contemporary version of "bread and circuses"—a tool that pacifies and distracts, particularly men, with gambling, celebrity, and empty tribalism while deeper societal and spiritual foundations erode.

I'm not watching the Super Bowl this year.

It's not because I hate fun.

It's not because I'm boring.

And it's not because I don't love and understand the game of football (actually love football).

I’m not watching the Super Bowl this year because I do understand it.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I’m 45 years old. I’m married. I have a family. I’ve built real wealth. And I’ve spent the last 5 years studying media, attention, and influence every single day.

So from the outside looking in the Super Bowl doesn't look like entertainment. It looks like something else entirely.

And once you really understand what the Super Bowl IS you can’t unsee it.

So let’s talk about what’s happening with Super Bowl LX. Let’s talk about what’s happening right now. And let’s talk about what actually matters in life...

Bread and Circuses (2026 Edition)

You don’t need to be a conspiracy theorist to understand this.

This is basic power dynamics.

"Football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult." - George Orwell, 1984

When a society is anxious, fragmented, and spiritually hollow, the best response by the powers that be has always been the same.

Distract them, entertain them, sedate them.

And it's been going on for longer than you think…

The phrase “bread and circuses” was coined by the Roman poet Juvenal around 100 AD to describe how governments used free food and lavish entertainment to keep the population passive and unconcerned with real responsibility.

It marked the slow death of serious citizenship.

And it's still around today...

In modern terms, we call it The Super Bowl.

Today it comes packaged as endless gambling ads, celebrity worship, alcohol-fueled fan identity, all while you wear another man’s name on your back and scream at a screen.

Consider how horrifying this is...

Tonight, millions of men will gather around TVs, drink themselves numb, lose hours to the spectacle, and argue over teams and outcomes that couldn’t care less about them.

All while mistaking emotional stimulation for meaning.

And on Monday morning, they’ll wake up and nothing in their life will be improved.

How tragic...

The Plight of the Modern Man

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Your typical male that tunes in and watches tonight's SuperBowl is the most non-threatening man that has ever existed.

He's distracted by gambling ads, he's emotionally reactive, and he has strong opinions on things that really have no bearing on his life.

Do you think Patriots quarterback Drake Maye cares about you?

Do you think that Bad Bunny is sitting there today thinking about your life and how to improve it?

THEN WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH ABOUT THEM?

I don't know and I don't get it, but all I can tell you is that the system loves this kind of person because he's loud, tired, and harmless.

The system loves this man.

Because:

Birth rates collapse

Families dissolve

More people place their faith in football and gambling than in God

And the solution offered is always…

more and more entertainment.

The REAL Super Bowl Is at CHURCH

While most of the country is glued to a screen today, here’s what I’ll be doing instead:

I’ll be taking my family to Mass.

I’ll be wearing dress clothes (not another man’s name on my back).

I’ll spend the day with my wife and family.

After Mass, we’ll talk about the homily, the Bible and real conversations on things that matter. We’ll reflect on gratitude, God, and responsibility.

I’m not saying this because I think I’m better than anyone else.

I say this because I have a rule as a creator online:

I refuse to outsource my attention to institutions that don’t respect me.

YOU SHOULD TOO.

The Line in the Sand

I want you to think of things like this...

Every brain is a mental operating system, and the way that you send it new information is by giving it attention.

Therefore, attention is the highest form of consent.

It is the food that you give your brain.

Where you mind it shapes who you become.

I would rather focus my thoughts on God rather than Bad Bunny.

So here's the lesson to all of you: Give your attention to things that matter.

Some of you reading this may feel triggered right now. That’s fine.
It probably means I hit something uncomfortable.

Deep down, you know it and you secretly agree with me.

Deep down you know the world doesn't need more entertained men.

It needs rooted discipline and faithful men.

Men who can spend time with their families instead of reacting to every little thing that they see on a screen.

So no, I'm not watching the Super Bowl today.

And if you're serious about your soul, your family, and your future...Maybe you shouldn't either.

If you agree with this article, share it.

And if you disagree with me, tell me in the comments why.

God bless each and every one of you.
